glacier ice caves waterfalls roadtrip

Self-drive the South Coast past black-sand beaches and thundering waterfalls to Europe’s largest glacier. Hike the ice with crampons, step inside a glowing blue ice cave, and watch bergs drift at Jökulsárlón lagoon.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages 2–8°C, summer 10–15°C, autumn 3–8°C, and winter 0–5°C on Iceland's south coast. Short winter daylight and changeable Atlantic weather define this itinerary. Check road.is before driving east on Route 1. Ice caves are accessible November–March when meltwater refreezes into stable blue chambers.

Activities

Self-drive the south coast past Skógafoss and Reynisfjara black beach toward the glacier. Join guided glacier hikes with crampons and blue ice-cave tours inside Vatnajökull. Photograph icebergs at Jökulsárlón lagoon and Diamond Beach where bergs wash ashore.

Culture

The south coast is Iceland's busiest tourist corridor, but winter thins the crowds. Small towns like Vík and Hof serve travellers with guesthouses and cafés. Respect rope barriers at beaches and caves — sneaker waves and collapsing ice are real hazards.

Natural history

Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier, covering roughly 8% of Iceland beneath several volcanoes including Grímsvötn. Jökulsárlón formed as the glacier retreated, leaving a proglacial lake filled with calved icebergs. Winter ice caves form where meltwater drains beneath the glacier edge.

Local food

Highway cafés serve lamb soup, fish stew, and rye bread baked in geothermal ground near Lake Mývatn if you loop north. Vík's soup kitchens are reliable on storm days. Pack snacks for long drives — services thin between towns.

Fun fact

Jökulsárlón appeared only in the 1930s as the glacier retreated — today it doubles in size each decade, a visible measure of Iceland's changing ice.
