hiking UNESCO bears remote

A UNESCO wilderness at Hokkaido’s far edge, where brown bears roam and waterfalls tumble straight into the sea. Walk the Shiretoko Five Lakes boardwalks, cruise the roadless coast, and hike to the warm-river Kamuiwakka falls.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages 2–10°C, summer 12–20°C, autumn 6–14°C, and winter −10 to −2°C on Shiretoko. This summer itinerary accesses the Five Lakes boardwalks and coastal cruises. Fog and rain are frequent on the peninsula. Sea ice locks the coast in winter.

Activities

Walk the Shiretoko Five Lakes elevated boardwalks through brown bear habitat. Cruise the roadless coast for whales, sea eagles, and waterfalls plunging to the sea. Hike toward Kamuiwakka hot-water falls on the Rausu side.

Culture

Shiretoko is UNESCO-listed and Ainu sacred land — Utoro is a small fishing port serving summer visitors. Bear safety is serious: carry bells, stay on marked routes, and attend ranger briefings. Respect no-entry zones during salmon runs.

Natural history

Shiretoko is one of Japan's last true wildernesses — brown bears, Blakiston's fish owls, and Steller's sea eagles inhabit the peninsula. Drift ice from the Sea of Okhotsk delivers nutrients each winter. No roads cross the interior.

Local food

Utoro harbour restaurants serve uni (sea urchin), crab, and sashimi from the day's catch. Rausu on the east coast is known for kinki (thornyhead fish) hotpot. Convenience stores stock onigiri for trail lunches.

Fun fact

Shiretoko means "end of the Earth" in Ainu — the peninsula's tip is one of the southernmost places where drift ice reaches shore.
