Pallas-Yllästunturi & Midnight Sun
Some of the cleanest air on Earth blows across these rounded Lapland fells. Walk the Hetta–Pallas trail between the peaks under a sun that never sets, through open tundra, birch forest, and reindeer country.
Weather
Spring averages −5 to 5°C, summer 12–20°C, autumn 0–10°C, and winter −15 to −5°C in Pallas-Ylläs. This summer trek walks under the midnight sun with cool nights on the fells. The area records some of Europe's cleanest air. Mosquitoes peak in June on forest sections.
Activities
Hike the Hetta–Pallas trail between rounded fells and open tundra. Climb Yllästunturi for panoramic Lapland views. Walk through birch forest and reindeer pasture under a sun that barely sets in midsummer.
Culture
Pallas-Ylläs National Park is a cornerstone of Finnish nature protection — air quality monitoring began here in the 1930s. Sámi reindeer herders work the fells; give herds space on the trail. Äkäslompolo is the main village hub.
Natural history
The fells are among western Europe's largest roadless areas — rounded remnants of ancient mountains worn by Ice Age ice. Reindeer, lemmings, and rough-legged buzzards inhabit the tundra. Pallas measures some of the cleanest atmospheric air on the continent.
Local food
Village restaurants serve reindeer stew, cloudberry desserts, and rye bread. Wilderness huts on the Hetta–Pallas trail have basic shelters — pack food from Äkäslompolo. After the trek, a lakeside sauna and cold plunge are obligatory.
Fun fact
Pallas-Ylläs has been measuring air quality since 1937 — its data helped prove that Arctic air is among the cleanest on Earth.
