Rallarvegen Downhill
Norway’s most famous bike route drops 900 metres from the Hardangervidda plateau to the fjord at Flåm. Ride past alpine lakes and the Finse research station, then freewheel through 80 km of mountain scenery to the Aurlandsfjord.
Weather
Spring averages 0–8°C, summer 12–20°C, autumn 4–12°C, and winter −8 to 2°C on Hardangervidda. This summer descent rides snow-free trails from Finse at 1,222m. Weather shifts fast on the plateau; pack layers. Flåm fjord section is milder and often rainy.
Activities
Take the Bergen Railway to Finse and ride 80 km downhill through Hardangervidda to Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord. Pass alpine lakes and the Finse research station. Finish with a fjord cruise back to Bergen.
Culture
Rallarvegen was built by navvies (rallar) who constructed the Bergen Railway in the early 1900s. Finse is Norway's highest station, accessible only by train. Flåm attracts cruise ships but the village retains fjord charm.
Natural history
Hardangervidda is Europe's largest mountain plateau — a treeless expanse of lakes and reindeer herds. The route drops 900 metres through four climate zones to the Aurlandsfjord. Finse was the filming location for the ice planet Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
Local food
Finse Hotel serves hearty mountain meals before the descent. Flåm breweries and cafés celebrate finishers with brown cheese and waffles. Pack trail snacks for the long plateau section between huts.
