Lofoten Sea Kayak
Paddle between the jagged peaks of Lofoten where mountains rise straight from the sea and white-sand beaches sit beneath Arctic summits. Camp on empty islands, watch eagles overhead, and kayak under a sun that barely sets.
Weather
Spring averages 2–8°C, summer 12–18°C, autumn 5–10°C, and winter −2 to 4°C across the Lofoten Islands. Summer paddling runs under the midnight sun with water around 10–12°C. Calm mornings give way to afternoon sea breezes on exposed crossings. Fog can roll in quickly between islands.
Activities
Island-hop by kayak between Reine, Moskenes, and the outer skerries with camp nights on empty beaches. Paddle the narrow Trollfjord where cliffs rise vertically on both sides. Short summit hikes from landings reach ridges above white-sand coves — combine paddling and walking in a single day.
Culture
Lofoten’s fishing heritage is everywhere — rorbuer cabins now rent to kayakers, and drying racks for cod still frame the villages. Guides blend local knowledge with a deep respect for changing sea conditions. After long paddle days, communities gather at harbour grills and small restaurants in Reine and Svolvær.
Natural history
The Lofoten archipelago is a chain of drowned mountains where white-tailed eagles nest on sea cliffs and otters fish in tidal channels. Trollfjord narrows to a width you can almost touch both walls. Underwater, kelp forests shelter cod and pollock in some of the world’s richest fishing grounds.
Local food
Stockfish and fresh cod dominate menus — try bacalao stew or fish burgers at harbour cafés. Brown cheese on waffles is a Norwegian classic worth ordering for lunch. Local bakeries in Svolvær sell skillingsboller (cinnamon buns) ideal for pre-paddle energy.
Fun fact
Lofoten hosts the world’s largest deep-water coral reef — the Røst Reef — stretching 40 km along the seafloor, though you’ll see its effects in the abundant fish rather than the coral itself from a kayak.
