hiking fjord cliff iconic

Two of Norway’s most celebrated cliff hikes sit above the same fjord: the flat plateau of Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and the Kjeragbolten boulder, wedged in a crevice over a 1,000m drop. A summer of long light and vertigo-inducing views.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages 6–12°C, summer 14–22°C, autumn 8–14°C, and winter 0–6°C around the Lysefjord. Summer brings long light for Preikestolen and Kjerag hikes on this itinerary. Coastal breezes cool cliff tops even on warm days. Rain and fog can close viewpoints without warning.

Activities

Hike to Preikestolen's flat cliff plateau and stand on Kjeragbolten boulder wedged above a 1,000m drop. Cruise the Lysefjord beneath vertical walls and climb the historic Flørli railway stairs. Wander Gamle Stavanger's white wooden houses on arrival day.

Culture

Stavanger is Norway's oil capital with a charming old town core. Hiking culture is egalitarian — families and trail runners share the Preikestolen path. Local guides enforce safety at Kjerag; queue politely for photos on the boulder.

Natural history

The Lysefjord was carved by glaciers leaving sheer granite walls over 1,000 metres high. Kjeragbolten is a glacial erratic wedged in a mountain crevice. Preikestolen is a flat erosion remnant of a former cliff face overlooking the fjord.

Local food

Stavanger has Norway's best restaurant scene outside Oslo — try fresh cod, fish soup, and skillingsboller cinnamon buns. Fjord cruises often serve coffee and waffles. Pack trail lunches; summit kiosks sell snacks in peak season.

Fun fact

The Flørli stairs climb 4,444 wooden steps beside a historic hydro pipeline — one of the longest wooden stairways in the world.
