hiking long-distance wilderness midnight sun

Sweden’s great northern trail winds through glacier-carved valleys and reindeer country. Walk the classic Abisko–Nikkaluokta section beneath the midnight sun, staying in cosy mountain huts and crossing lakes by rowboat.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages −5 to 5°C, summer 10–18°C, autumn −2 to 6°C, and winter −15 to −5°C in Swedish Lapland. This summer trek runs under the midnight sun with cool nights in mountain huts. Mosquitoes peak in June–July; pack repellent. River crossings swell after rain.

Activities

Trek the classic Abisko–Nikkaluokta section of Kungsleden through birch valleys and open fells. Cross lakes by rowboat at Sami reindeer herding camps. Stay in STF mountain huts with shared kitchens and sauna evenings.

Culture

Kungsleden is Sweden's premier long-distance trail, maintained by STF (Swedish Tourist Association). Sámi reindeer herders move stock through the valleys; give herds space. Hut etiquette: carry out trash, book beds ahead in peak season.

Natural history

The trail crosses the Abisko Alps and broad tundra valleys beneath Lapporten, the U-shaped mountain gate. Glacial rivers drain into Torneträsk, Sweden's seventh-largest lake. Lemmings, reindeer, and ptarmigan are common wildlife sightings.

Local food

Huts sell basic supplies — pasta, canned stew, and chocolate — but pack food from Kiruna or Abisko. Reindeer stew and cloudberry desserts appear at lodge restaurants. Fika with coffee and knäckebröd is the Swedish trail ritual.

Fun fact

Lapporten's perfect U-shaped valley is so distinctive it appears on Swedish postage stamps and countless Lapland tourism campaigns.
