About the region

Weather

Spring averages 2–10°C, summer 12–20°C, autumn 4–12°C, and winter −15 to −5°C in Katmai. Bear viewing peaks July–September when salmon run at Brooks Falls. Rain is frequent; platforms have covered sections. Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes hikes need dry weather for ash terrain.

Activities

Watch brown bears snatch leaping salmon from Brooks Falls viewing platforms feet from the action. Fly in by floatplane from King Salmon. Hike the ash-filled Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, created by the 1912 Novarupta eruption.

Culture

Brooks Camp is a managed wildlife site — rangers control platform access and enforce bear-distance rules. Floatplane is the only access; book lodges or campground months ahead. Photography etiquette: no flash, no loud noises near bears.

Natural history

Katmai protects the world's largest protected brown bear population — over 2,000 bears feed on sockeye salmon each summer. The 1912 eruption buried 40 square miles in ash, creating the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Wolves and bald eagles scavenge the salmon runs.

Local food

Brooks Camp dining hall serves buffet meals for lodge guests; day visitors pack lunches. King Salmon has basic cafés before the floatplane. Anchorage is the last stop for proper restaurants and gear shops.

Fun fact

The Brooks Falls bear cam has streamed live to millions worldwide — bears queue on the waterfall lip waiting for salmon to leap within reach.
