Karhunkierros & Oulanka
Finland’s best-loved trail, the “Bear’s Ring,” loops through Oulanka National Park past roaring rapids, swing bridges, and river gorges. Walk old-growth forest and sleep in simple wilderness huts along the way.
Weather
Spring averages 0–10°C, summer 15–22°C, autumn 4–12°C, and winter −15 to −5°C in Oulanka. This summer trek enjoys long daylight and mild hiking weather. Mosquitoes peak in June — repellent and head nets are essential. River crossings swell after heavy rain.
Activities
Trek the 80-km Karhunkierros (Bear's Ring) through Oulanka National Park past roaring rapids and suspension bridges. Cross the Kiutaköngäs rapids viewpoint and sleep in wilderness huts along the route. Old-growth pine and spruce forest frames the entire trail.
Culture
Karhunkierros is Finland's most popular long-distance trail — book huts ahead in July. Everyman's right allows camping with respect for nature. Kuusamo and Ruka are the gateway towns; Finns greet fellow hikers with "moi" on the trail.
Natural history
Oulanka sits on the Russian border with calcareous bedrock creating rare arctic flora. The Oulanka River cuts a deep gorge through pine forest. Brown bears, wolverines, and golden eagles inhabit the park; reindeer appear on northern sections.
Local food
Huts have basic cooking shelters — pack pasta, cured sausage, and coffee from Kuusamo. Ruka resort restaurants serve reindeer stew and Lappish potatoes after the trek. Bilberry picking along the trail is a Finnish summer tradition.
Fun fact
Karhunkierros means Bear's Ring in Finnish — the trail loops through territory where brown bears still roam, though sightings on the main route are rare.
