A pristine alpine valley closed to private cars, where the clear Azusa River runs beneath the Hotaka peaks. Walk the valley boardwalks, climb toward Karasawa cirque, and soak in mountain onsen under the Japanese Alps.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages 8–18°C, summer 15–25°C, autumn 8–18°C, and winter −10 to 0°C in Kamikōchi. This summer itinerary enjoys mild valley walking and cooler alpine climbs. Typhoon remnants can bring heavy rain in August. Mountain weather shifts fast above 2,500m on Karasawa routes.

Activities

Walk Kamikōchi's Azusa River boardwalks beneath the Hotaka peaks. Climb toward Karasawa cirque for alpine views and mountain huts. Day-trip to Norikura plateau and soak in onsen at Matsumoto or nearby lodges.

Culture

Kamikōchi is car-free — access by bus and taxi only, preserving the valley's quiet. Japanese hiking culture is orderly and punctual; greet fellow walkers on the trail. Remove shoes at hut entrances; carry cash for mountain lodges.

Natural history

Kamikōchi sits at 1,500m in the Hida Mountains, carved by glaciers and the Azusa River. The Hotaka range rises above 3,000m; Karasawa cirque holds snow into summer. Japanese macaques and serow inhabit the lower forests.

Local food

Mountain lodges serve curry rice, udon, and miso soup with mountain vegetables. Matsumoto's castle town has soba noodles and basashi (horse sashimi) for adventurous eaters. Konbini snacks from the bus station fuel early starts.

Fun fact

Kamikōchi was discovered by a British missionary in 1891 and has been protected from development ever since — private cars have been banned since 1975.
