Shikotsu-Toya Lakes Kayak
Japan’s clearest caldera lakes mirror volcanic peaks and old-growth forest on Hokkaido’s southwestern edge. Paddle Lake Shikotsu’s impossibly transparent water, explore Toya’s forested shores, and soak in lakeside onsen.
Weather
Spring averages 8–18°C, summer 20–26°C, autumn 10–20°C, and winter −8 to −2°C around Lake Shikotsu and Toya. July–August brings warm days and cool mornings on this summer kayak trip. Occasional rain showers come from mountain convection. Humidity is lower than mainland Japan; lake water stays refreshingly cold.
Activities
Caldera lake kayaking on Shikotsu and Toya covers crystal-clear water with forested shorelines and volcanic views. Paddle to hot-spring inlets and quiet bays inaccessible by road. Combine half-day paddles with lakeside onsen soaks and short forest walks on the Shikotsu-Toya National Park trails.
Culture
The Shikotsu-Toya area blends indigenous Ainu heritage with Japanese outdoor culture — onsen towns, forest shrines, and kayak outfitters share the lakeshore. Locals take pride in the water clarity and protect it carefully. Bowing, shoe removal, and quiet onsen etiquette apply at lakeside ryokan.
Natural history
Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake formed 40,000 years ago, with visibility exceeding 25 metres thanks to minimal sediment and volcanic filtration. Lake Toya is an active volcanic caldera that last erupted in 2000. Brown bears inhabit the surrounding forests — bear bells and proper food storage are standard.
Local food
Lake Toya and Shikotsu onsen towns serve Hokkaido specialities: jingisukan (grilled lamb), kaisen-don (seafood rice bowls), and miso ramen. Onsen ryokan breakfasts feature grilled fish, rice, and pickled vegetables. Try soft-serve ice cream made with local milk at roadside stops.
Fun fact
Lake Shikotsu never freezes despite Hokkaido’s harsh winters — its depth (363 metres) and volcanic heat keep the water above freezing, earning it the nickname “the lake that doesn’t freeze.”
