About the region

Weather

Spring averages 2–10°C, summer 15–22°C, autumn 5–14°C, and winter −10 to −2°C in Gros Morne. This summer trip enjoys the best trail conditions and boat tours on Western Brook Pond. Fog rolls in off the Gulf of St Lawrence quickly. Summit day on Gros Morne Mountain needs clear skies.

Activities

Hike the Tablelands trail across exposed orange peridotite earth — rock from the Earth's mantle. Boat Western Brook Pond between 600-metre cliff walls. Summit Gros Morne Mountain for panoramic views over fjords and forest.

Culture

Newfoundland culture is famously warm and storytelling-driven — Rocky Harbour pubs welcome hikers with live music. Parks Canada manages access with strict wildlife and camping rules. Local accents and Irish-tinged English reflect settler heritage.

Natural history

Gros Morne is a UNESCO site where plate tectonics exposed mantle rock at the Tablelands. Western Brook Pond is a freshwater fjord cut off from the sea. Moose, caribou, and black bears inhabit the forests; whales appear offshore in summer.

Local food

Rocky Harbour serves moose stew, fish and chips, and toutons (fried dough) with molasses. Lobster suppers run in coastal communities through summer. Bakeapple jam from cloudberries is a Newfoundland specialty for your toast.

Fun fact

The Tablelands rock is peridotite from the Earth's mantle — normally buried 30 km deep, it was thrust to the surface by ancient continental collision.
