Vertical basalt walls rise 600 metres from the ocean at Vestmanna, where seabird colonies fill every ledge. Combine a cliff-top hike with a boat trip into the grottoes below — one of the most dramatic landscapes in the North Atlantic.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages 4–8°C, summer 10–13°C, autumn 6–10°C, and winter 2–6°C at Vestmanna. This summer trip combines cliff hikes with boat tours into sea grottoes. Calm seas are essential for the boat trip. Cliff-top trails are exposed to Atlantic wind.

Activities

Take the Vestmanna bird-cliff boat tour into basalt grottoes beneath 600-metre walls. Hike the Koltur viewpoint and coastal ridge trails. Walk to Gásadalur waterfall where the stream drops straight into the ocean.

Culture

Vestmanna is a fishing village on Streymoy's west coast — the boat tour is one of the Faroes' oldest tourist excursions. Gásadalur was isolated until a tunnel opened in 2004. Tórshavn supplies the first and last nights.

Natural history

Vestmanna cliffs are vertical basalt columns rising 600 metres from the North Atlantic. Seabird colonies fill every ledge — puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes in vast numbers. Gásadalur's Múlafossur waterfall plunges off the cliff edge into the surf.

Local food

Vestmanna harbour café serves fish soup before or after the boat tour. Tórshavn restaurants offer ræst lamb and langoustine. Pack trail snacks for Gásadalur — the village has limited dining.

Fun fact

Gásadalur was cut off from the rest of Streymoy until 2004, when a tunnel finally gave its handful of residents a road link — the waterfall walk is now one of the Faroes' most photographed spots.
