Weather
Spring averages 4–8°C, summer 10–13°C, autumn 6–10°C, and winter 2–6°C across the Faroe Islands. This winter itinerary brings short days and relentless Atlantic wind. Rain falls on roughly 300 days a year; clear spells are treasured. Mykines boat crossings cancel in rough seas.
Activities
Hike above Sørvágsvatn lake to the cliff-edge viewpoint over the “floating lake” optical illusion. Visit Saksun and Gásadalur waterfalls tumbling to the sea. Boat to Mykines for puffin colonies and sheer sea cliffs when conditions allow.
Culture
Faroese culture blends Norse heritage with modern Nordic life — grass-roofed houses, chain dancing, and a strong knitting tradition. Tórshavn is one of the world's smallest capitals. Faroese is the first language; Danish and English are widely understood.
Natural history
The archipelago is volcanic basalt sculpted by Ice Age glaciers into sheer sea cliffs and deep fjords. Millions of seabirds nest on ledges — puffins, gannets, and fulmars. Pilot whales are part of traditional Faroese life, though controversial internationally.
Local food
Try ræst (fermented lamb), fresh fish, and skerpikjøt (wind-dried mutton) for traditional flavours. Tórshavn cafés do excellent fish soup and rye bread. Etika and other harbour restaurants serve Nordic tasting menus with local ingredients.
Fun fact
Sheep outnumber people on the Faroe Islands roughly two to one — the name Faroe itself means Sheep Islands in Old Norse.
