Bowron Lakes Canoe Circuit
A 116-km loop through ten lakes and seven portages in the Cariboo Mountains — one of the world’s great canoe circuits. Moose at dawn, mirror lakes at dusk, and a week of pure backcountry paddling through British Columbia wilderness.

Spring averages 5–15°C, summer 18–25°C, autumn 0–12°C, and winter −15 to −5°C in the Cariboo Mountains. The canoe circuit runs June through September when days are warmest. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in July. Water is cold year-round; wind on the larger lakes can whip up quickly.

Wildlife watching from the water includes moose at dawn, beavers along shorelines, and loons at dusk. Short hikes from campsites reach viewpoints above the Cariboo Mountains.

Bowron Lake Provincial Park operates a reservation system that keeps the circuit uncrowded — paddlers share campsites and portage trails with a quiet camaraderie. Quesnel and Wells are the gateway towns, both with a laid-back Cariboo country feel. Leave-no-trace ethics are strictly observed on the route.
Natural history
The Cariboo Mountains are part of the Interior wet belt, where ten glacier-fed lakes link through a chain of short portages. Moose, black bears, and beavers are common along shorelines; loons call across the water at dusk. Old-growth spruce and cedar fringe the northern lakes.

You pack your own camp meals for the week — freeze-dried dinners, oatmeal, and trail bars from Vancouver or Quesnel grocery stores. After the circuit, celebrate in Quesnel with Cariboo pub fare: bison burgers, BC salmon, and craft beer from local breweries.

The Bowron Lakes circuit was originally designed as a wildlife sanctuary in the 1920s before becoming one of the world’s premier canoe routes — the 116-km loop can be completed in as few as six days or savoured over ten.
