One of the world’s great coastal drives loops the Cape Breton Highlands. Hike the Skyline Trail along ocean cliffs at sunset, watch for whales and moose, and follow surf-battered headlands between Acadian villages.

About the region

Weather

Spring averages 5–12°C, summer 18–25°C, autumn 8–16°C, and winter −5 to 2°C on Cape Breton Island. This summer itinerary hits the Skyline Trail at golden hour with mild hiking days. Ocean fog can swallow cliff viewpoints in minutes. Gulf of St Lawrence breezes cool coastal trails.

Activities

Drive the Cabot Trail loop through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Hike the Skyline Trail for sunset views over ocean cliffs and whale-filled waters. Add Franey and Middle Head trails for forested headlands and moose habitat.

Culture

Cape Breton blends Acadian French, Scottish, and Mi'kmaq heritage — ceilidhs and fiddle music run through summer festivals. Baddeck was Alexander Graham Bell's summer home. The Cabot Trail is a rite of passage for Atlantic Canadian road trippers.

Natural history

The highlands plateau drops sharply to the Gulf of St Lawrence, creating dramatic cliff trails. Moose were introduced in the 1940s and thrive in the park. Minke and pilot whales feed offshore; bald eagles nest along the coastal forests.

Local food

Chéticamp and Baddeck serve lobster rolls, seafood chowder, and Acadian rappie pie. Glenora Distillery makes single-malt whisky beside the trail. Farm markets sell blueberries and oatcakes between hikes.

Fun fact

The Cabot Trail is named for explorer John Cabot, though he likely landed elsewhere — the 300-km loop still ranks among the world's most scenic coastal drives.
