Banff & the Rockies
Frozen turquoise lakes, powder slopes, and evergreen forests under enormous skies. Ski or snowshoe by day, then soak in hot springs as the peaks turn pink at dusk. Adrenaline and easy scenic days in one trip.
Weather
Spring averages −2 to 10°C, summer 15–25°C, autumn 0–12°C, and winter −15 to −5°C in Banff. Reliable ski-hill snow runs November through April on this winter trip. Chinook winds can spike valley temperatures briefly. Higher slopes often sit above fog in brilliant sun while the town stays grey.
Activities
Ski Lake Louise or Sunshine Village for Rockies powder and glacier views. Snowshoe frozen Johnston Canyon to blue ice formations, or join guided ice walks on the lake. Soak in Banff Upper Hot Springs after cold days; wildlife drives may spot elk and bighorn sheep along the Bow Valley.
Culture
Banff is Canada's first national park town — a mix of outdoor enthusiasts, seasonal workers, and international visitors. Parks Canada manages access and wildlife protocols strictly. The town centre is walkable; locals share trail conditions freely at cafés and gear shops.
Natural history
The Canadian Rockies rose through tectonic collision, carved by glaciers into the sharp peaks and turquoise lakes seen today. Elk, wolves, and grizzly bears inhabit the park; winter concentrates elk in the valley bottoms. Frozen lakes like Louise and Moraine reveal a quieter, crystalline landscape.
Local food
Banff restaurants range from pub burgers to fine dining with Alberta beef and bison. Try poutine, maple treats, and craft beer from local breweries. The Banff Springs Hotel afternoon tea is a classic splurge after a morning on the slopes.
Fun fact
Lake Louise freezes solid enough in winter to host an ice castle and skating rink — the same lake that glows turquoise in summer under glacial silt.
